NORWOOD-- Funeral services for Wendell D. Barkley, 84, of Norwood will be held Monday, June 12, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Buck Funeral Home, Norwood with Rev. Lee Sweeney, officiating. Burial will follow the service in the Bixby Cemetery, Norfolk. A reception will follow committal at the Norfolk American Legion.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, June 11, 2017 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at the Buck Funeral Home, 7 Park Street, Norwood. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley, 6805 USH 11; Potsdam, New York 13676.
Wendell is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Jean of Norwood; by a son, Stephen (Robin) Barkley of Norfolk and by daughter-in-law, Dawne Barkley of Madrid; by grandchildren, Amanda Burns and Brandon and Blake Barkley, Michael O'Neil, Megan Poste, Lindsay Barkley and Logan Barkley and by 12 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Weldon (Barbara) Barkley and Wayne (Barbara Bough) Barkley, as well as by nieces and nephews.
A son, Stuart Barkley and a sister, Beverly Scott, pre-deceased him.
Wendell was born, May 1, 1933 in Wilmington, New York, the son of the late Wilbur and Blanche (Dignean) Barkley. He attended high school till the 10th grade, when he enlisted in the US Navy. Following his service, Wendell married Jean Daggette on October 19, 1957 at the Norfolk Methodist Church with Rev. Ernest Drappa, officiating. Wendell worked for the New York Telephone Company and Norwood Plumbing, prior to being employed by General Motors as an electrician, retiring in 1988 after 32 years.
Wendell enjoyed hunting, he was a member of the Raripaco Hunting Club and the Norfolk American Legion, he was a 55 year member of the Free and Accepted Mason's of Norwood and he loved Old Western Movies.
