NORWOOD—A Mass of Christian Burial for 90 year old Mary LaPointe, a resident of the United Helpers Assisted Living in Canton and formerly of Canton and Potsdam, will be held Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Church in Norwood with Rev. Msgr. John Murphy presiding. Burial will be held in St. Mary's Cemetery in Potsdam in the spring. Family and friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Norwood on Friday from 4-7 p.m. Mrs. LaPointe passed away early Monday morning at Maplewood.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Lisa LaPointe Billings, Colton and Paul Meyers, NJ; two grandchildren, Haley Billings and Tom Helmar and Elizabeth and Stephen Tucker; one great-grandson, Bradley T. Helmar, born on December 1, 2016 as well as several nieces and nephews. Mary was pre-deceased by a brother Fred Procida and two sisters, Caroline Bellardini and Jennie Procida.
Born in Detroit, Michigan on July 18, 1926 to the late Pasquale Procida and Eugenia Moribito, Mary moved to the North Country from Detroit. She married Wallace LaPointe Jr. at St. Andrew's Church in Norwood on October 20, 1952. Mary started working at the Potsdam Paper Mill and later worked at Clarkson as the 1st switchboard operator and later, worked at St. Lawrence University as a secretary in the Admissions Office, retiring in 1988 after 23 years of service. Mary was a devoted Christian, being a faithful member of St. Andrew's Church along with the Altar and Rosary Society. Even after her retirement, Mary was very active in her church and community and enjoyed playing cards in her spare time. Memorial Donations in her memory can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley or to the Potsdam Public Museum.
