PIERREPONTDorothy Mae Powers, 86, lifelong resident of Pierrepont, passed away Tuesday morning, June 19th at her home under the loving care of her family and Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley. Born February 8, 1926, daughter of George and Gertrude Smith, she attended Potsdam area schools. Dorothy worked on the family farm for many years and in the cafeterias at SUNY Potsdam and Potsdam Central School. She married John E. Powers on February 18, 1943 at the Methodist Parsonage in Canton, NY. John passed away on March 22, 1980.
Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Nancy and Alan Garrand, Richville; Anna and Clay Streit, Pierrepont; her grandson John and Martina Hitchman, Charleston, SC; her granddaughters, Kelsie and Matthew Polniak, South Colton; Katie and Jason Rafferty, Canton; Nicole and Ryan Hayes, Parishville; Melissa and Robert Weng, Freemont, NC and seven great-grandchildren and many sister and brother-in-laws, nieces, nephews and her dear friends and neighbors. Dorothy was pre-deceased by her husband, a son Charles E. Powers and all of her siblings.
Graveside services for Dorothy will be held Monday, June 25, 2012 at 2 p.m. in the Pierrepont Hill Cemetery with Rev. Karen Taylor, pastor of the United Church of Richville presiding. A luncheon will be held at the Pierrepont Fire Hall immediately following the services.
