Joan was my friend as long as I remember. Her family were very kind, and I knew I was welcome there at any time for rides to school, meals, and to admire their beautiful garden, especially the "black" tulips just outside the side door. Everything there was always neat, orderly, and on schedule--a good environment for children. Though we were separated by miles, we remained close friends through thick and thin, and I will miss her every day until we meet again. You all took good care of her during this last long illness, and she told me many times how much she appreciated it. Joan was a brave woman in innumerable ways, and never complained as many do about how "Life's not fair", though hers often wasn't. She often told me she was sorry she couldn't do more for her children and grandchildren. She loved you all so much.
