My memories of Dick started when I was a young teenager as he was a good friend of my brother Tom Hagelund, I remember my first taste of froglegs when Tom and Dick when " frogging at the CC Dam in North Lawrence.. Many other encounters would involve music, drinks and enjoyable times... He and his father spent a few dinners and holidays at our family farm as my brother, Tom so enjoyed their company as did the rest of our family. I know my brother and family spent time on Boyd pond as I heard of the adventures. My brother Tom spent the last day of his life helping Dick to get ready for a Thanksgiving day dinner and missed his own with our family... I spent that night with Tom and was so happy he was able to help Dick as they were good old friends.... A gentle, interesting and good soul will be missed... my condolences to his family...

I first met Dick at NYU in the late 60's, a turbulent time, but also filled with many great experiences we were able to look back on. I forget how we met but I think it was in my dormitory. The war was on big time and both of us felt that if the universe was the contrivance of some Devine being, that being can only be a criminal imbecile.
Even with one leg he made it around town without complaint. We went everywhere.
He certainly had the gift of a photographer's eye and his talents documented his travels around the world. I always bugged him to bring his photography of Papua New Guinea to a major museum. They were that good.
Dick was also a great cook and enjoyed all cuisines. When in town he never stopped exploring new restaurants. Dick and I ate at Wo Hops Chinese restaurant at all hours of the day. It was one of his favorites as it was open 24 hours a day.
I spent many an evening at his beloved Boyd Pond witnessing very fine meal creations after a canoe ride. There was also some excessive drinking and I had the satisfaction of congratulating myself on self–control in not saying: “I told you so”.
When visiting him I could easily understand his love of north county, nature and the very fine people there.
Dick had a million stories and adventures and I was always in awe listening to them. He had a great laugh. In the end he had his health issues but I think he’d had a good run for his money and he was ready to call it a day.
He will be missed.

So many incredible journeys and stories with Dick. We canoed all over northern NY, and I learned a lot about the secrets of the bounty of the outdoors from him. He knew what to eat, and where to find it. My life long love of pickled leaks and fresh garlic was all thanks to him. We snowshoed in the dead of winter to Lamsons Falls, and in spite of his wooden leg, he was lead much of the time. He never complained or let that hold him back. We drove all the way across the country in my little red convertible. Seeing friends along the way, enjoying the trip and not too concerned about the destination. Eventually we made it to San Francisco and spent a couple days in a city Dick knew well. He came all the way over to the Philippines while I was stationed there and we spent a couple weeks with me showing him the country I had learned to know and love so much. Our lives weaved together over the years and even though we didn’t see each other often, we picked up like we had just seen each other the day before, like great friends do. Some of the best times I cherished, new friends I met, and favorite memories were spending quiet evenings at his table at Boyd Pond, or sitting out by the dock listening to the Loons. Dick always had incredible stories that could go in dozens of directions, but always got back to where he was trying to get in beginning of the tale. I will miss you my life long friend, but I finish with this quote: “When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.” Kahil Gibran
