NORWOOD—Services for 98 year old Joseph A. Bregg Sr., a resident of 67 South Main Street, Norwood, will be held privately. Mr. Bregg passed away Thursday, January 19, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. Joe is survived by his two sons, Jerry Bregg, Norwood and Joseph Jr. and Ruth Bregg, Madrid; a grand-daughter Sara and a sister, Elsie Mastin, Newcastle, Indiana. Joseph was pre-deceased by a grandson, Joseph Bregg III, his two brothers, Frank and John and two sisters, Margaret "Ethel" Helmase and Sylvia Soloman.
Born in Buffalo, NY on November 26, 1918 to the late Joseph Breg and Margaret Zigler. He married Helene "Bobbie" Butler in 1942 and later divorced. Joe married Agnes E. Purvis on November 10, 1952 whom passed away on December 20, 1995. Joe later remarried Bobbie on October 25, 1997 until her passing on June 22, 2009. Joe was a local entrepreneur, working for various companies locally while being a self-employed tavern owner. He started working at his father's tavern in Norfolk and later, ran his own tavern in Norwood. He was the original owner and builder of the Sunset Lodge in Norwood, making the building from logs from his own property. He later worked at General Motors for fourteen years and then managed Jeremiah's Tavern in Norwood with his wife, Agnes. Joe was a communicant of St. Andrew's Church in Norwood and had a lifelong passion of Baseball. He was inducted into the NYS Softball Hall of Fame, playing ball until the age of 84. Joe enlisted in the U.S. Army twice, from 1936-1937 and again in 1942-1946. Memorial Donations in his memory can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care or to St. Andrew's Church.
