Norwood-- Funeral services for 86 year old Roy J. Oakes of United Helpers Nursing Home in Canton will be Tuesday at St. Andrews Church in Norwood at 11am with Rev. Raymond Moreau, presiding. Friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Norwood on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9. Mr. Oakes died Saturday at United Helpers Nursing Home in Canton. Survivors-- Sons-- Roy Jr. & Donna,Parishville; Patrick & Vicky,Pierrepont; and Timothy & Cathy, Williamsburg, VA. His daughters Mrs. David Eileen Bender,Santa Clara,CA; Mrs. Paul Maureen Santimaw,North Syrcause;and Mrs. Sonny Kathi Ling, Brasher. His brother Mark & Mary Oakes, Missouri. His sisters Mrs. Laura Clary,Norfolk; Mrs. Doris Thomas,Arizona; and Mrs. Jean McGinnis,Norfolk. His 13 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his brother Leonard, and his sisters Ethel Moreau, and Edith Oakes. He was also surivied by his extended family at the Canton United Helpers Nursing Home. Born on March 4, 1922 in Norwood the son of Arthur J. and Rose A. Dufore Oakes, he married Lillian M. Gleason on January 16, 1942 she died in December of 2005. He was Chief of Police for the Village of Norwood for many years. He was a member of St. Andrews church in Norwood. He was a past member of the Norwood American Legion and the Knights of Columbus in Norwood. He served with the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. He recieved a European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. Memorial Donations can be made to the United Helpers Nursing Home in Canton c/o Kathy Race, Activities Program or to the Alzheimers Support Group, c/o Kim McFaddin, 40 West Main Street, Canton, NY.
