SOUTH COLTONFuneral services for Helen Baker, age 89, will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at the Buck Funeral Home in Colton with Rev. Patricia Lennox and Linda Dunning presiding. Burial will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 1 p.m. in the Corinth Cemetery in Corinth, NY. Family and friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Colton on Friday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at 3 p.m. Mrs. Baker died peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on June 17, 2015. She was under care of Hospice of the St. Lawrence Valley.
Born on November 30, 1925 in Corinth, NY, she graduated Corinth High School and worked for General Electric in Schenectady, NY. She married George R. Baker of Warrensburg, NY on August 5, 1944 and later moved to South Colton with her family in 1964. Helen was employed at the Potsdam Nursing Home as an aide for over ten years until arthritis forced her to stop working. She continued to work as a private duty aide to several elderly clients in the area. She cared for her elderly mother, Rhoda, and was always there to help in any way she could. She loved to read, had an amazing green thumb, and being surrounded by family. She loved watching nature and especially the birds she could see out of her favorite window.
Helen is predeceased by her husband of 44 years, George, in 1986 as well as a child, Michael, who died shortly after his birth. Her parents, Floyd and Rhoda Wheaton, two sisters, Marjory and Lois, and three brothers, Chester, Kenneth and Robert also predeceased her.
She is survived by her children, William Baker, of South Colton, Mrs. Gary (Linda) Dunning of Colton, Ms. Miranda Foote of South Colton, Andrew Baker of Hopkinton, Ms. Mary Meyers, of South Colton, and Patrick Baker of Colton. She has eleven grandchildren and two step-grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren with three more on the way. Helen is also survived by two sisters, June Duguay, Balston Spa and Gail Wheaton, Corinth, NY as well as many nieces and nephews.
