COLTONFuneral services for 81 year old Peter J. Murphy Jr., 191 Wildwood Road, Colton, will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at St. Patricks Church in Colton with Rev. Jack Downs presiding. Burial will be held in St. Patricks Cemetery, Colton. Family and friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Colton on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. Mr. Murphy passed away early Monday morning at the United Helpers Riverledge Home in Ogdensburg.
Peter is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary, Colton; his five sons, Martin; Michael; Jeffrey; Douglas and Daniel and his wife Kali, all of Colton; his three daughters, Diane and Carter Burns, South Carolina; Vera Murphy and her companion Christopher DiTullio, Colton; Andrea and John Bates, West Potsdam; his ten grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Helen OLeary MacDonald, Canton. Peter was pre-deceased by an infant daughter and a sister, Noreen Ryan.
Born in Potsdam on July 13, 1933 to the late Peter and Vera Ames Murphy, Peter graduated from Potsdam High School in 1950 and continued his education at the Central City Business Institute in Syracuse, NY. Peter joined the U.S. Navy in 1952 and served during the Korean conflict. He married Mary Leary on May 2, 1959. Peter was a skilled carpenter, working for Malcom Green Construction and then working for SUNY Canton. He retired from SUNY Canton as a maintenance supervisor in 1992 after 30 years of service. Peter was a communicant of St. Patricks Church in Colton and was a member and past chief of the Colton Fire Department. He loved gardening and hunting, but mostly he enjoyed spending his time with his family. Memorial Donations in his memory can be made to the Colton Fire Department.
