NORWOOD-- Graveside services for 96 year old Belva M. Newton, a resident of the St. Regis Nursing Home, Massena, and formerly of Norwood, will be held Monday, December 1, 2014 at 1 pm in the Garfield Cemetery, Potsdam. Mrs. Newton passed away Monday morning at the St. Regis Nursing Home. Belva is survived by three sons, David and Janet, Potsdam; Bruce and his companion Penny Barber, Childwold; Joseph, Potsdam; six daughters, Wanda and Mitch Mitchell, New Windsor, NY; Roberta and Tom Williams, Penn Yan; Sharyl and John Nastke, Balston Spa; Kathy and John Grady, Norwood; Diana and Mark Newton-Crosby, Canton; Maureen King, Norwood; several grandchildren, great grand and great-great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. Belva was pre-deceased by her husband, Maurice, a son Maurice, a daughter Beverly Reed and her sister Virginia.
Born in Brockville, Ontario Canada on February 23, 1918 to the late Frank B. and Emily J. Hollington, she married Maurice W. Newton. Belva was a homemaker and also worked for the Head Start Program, as she was the first cook for the program. She was well known for her homemade donuts and popcorn balls. Belva also enjoyed reading and playing Yahtzee. The family would like to thank everyone at the St. Regis Nursing Home for their care and compassion in their care for Belva, especially the nurses on C-1.
