CANTON-- Funeral services for 88 year old Janet Speer Thornton, a resident of Partridge Knoll, 30 Sullivan Drive, Canton and formerly of Norwood, will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at the Buck Funeral Home in Colton. Burial will be held in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Colton. Family and friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Colton on Monday from 12 noon until the time of the funeral. Mrs. Thornton passed away early Saturday morning at her residence. Janet is survived by her husband of 60 years, Edward, Canton; three sons, Hugh and Martha Gilliland, Edmond, Oklahoma; Thomas and Joan Thornton, Clarion, Iowa; Steven and Laurie Thornton, Colton; her daughter, Suzanne and Richard Burlingame, Galway, NY; a daughter-in-law, Dawn Juckett, Indian Lake; five grandchildren; Sarah and Chris Fink; Scott and Michelle Burlingame; Julie and Rob Schmidt; Dean Thornton and Bali MacKentley; Shawn Thornton and her three great-grandchildren, Ryan and Hayley Fink and Ella MacKentley-Thornton. Janet was pre-deceased by a son, David Juckett; her brother Donald Speer and her two sisters, Elizabeth Orologio and MaryJane Logan. Born in Ogdensburg on July 30, 1925 to the late Walter C. and Doris Wells Speer, she married Edward F. Thornton on April 10, 1953. She received her Registered Nurse degree during WWII, and worked as a RN at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital until she became a case worker for the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services, where she worked for 14 years, until her retirement in 1980. Janet enjoyed quilting, painting, camping and traveling. She received her most enjoyment spending time with her family, especially her three little great-grandchildren, and she was truly a lifelong nurse at heart. The family would like to thank the St. Lawrence Valley Hospice and Palliative Care Staff and send a special thank-you to Lucille D’Agostino and Christine Snell.
