Obituary of Harley F. Merithew

COLTON-- Funeral services for Harley F. Merithew, 75, a resident of Leesburg, FL and Colton, NY will be held on Wednesday December 5 at 1 1:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, Colton, with Rev. Andrew Amyot presiding. Burial will be at the Union Cemetery, Risley Rd., DeKalb Junction at 2 p.m. Mr. Merithew passed away on November 23, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Katherine (Edgerton) Merithew and two children; Patrick J.”P.J.” Merithew and partner Carrie Bryant of DeKalb Jct., NY and Theresa “Tracy” (Anthony) Corpus of Goose Creek, SC; four grandchildren: Marie, Rhys, Sage, and Tony; his father, Claude Merithew, three brothers: Richard (Chris) Merithew, Robert (Shirley) Merithew, and Paul (Jean) Merithew; two sisters: Doris (James) Smith and Geraldine (Richard) Fletcher; 15 nieces and nephews; 14 grand nieces and nephews and a number of great grand’s. He was predeceased in death by his mother in 2000 and by a nephew James Smith in 1977. Harley was born on May 13, 1937 to Claude & Ida (Steacy) Merithew. Harley was in the first graduating class of Hermon-DeKalb Central School. He attended ATC Canton ( SUNY Canton) and Syracuse University. He began his working career at Crouse-Hinds Co., Syracuse, NY which later became part of Cooper Industries. In 1983, he was named Product Manager of the Cooper Lighting Co. in Vicksburg, MS. On November 30, 1963, Harley married Katherine Edgerton at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Liverpool, NY. Harley was a member of the Catholic Communities of St. Paul in Leesburg, FL and St. Patrick’s in Colton. Over the years Harley served as a Eucharistic minister, an Usher and on many committees, projects and fund raisers. He was a member of 3rd Degree and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He served in various capacities and offices including Deputy Grand Knight for Council #5082, Baldwinsville, NY. In the 1980‘s, Harley was affiliated with St. Mary’s Scout Troop #119 in Baldwinsville, NY for 5 years, serving as Scout Master for 2 years. As well as being an avid Flea Marketer, he especially enjoyed wood working and remodeling a number of his homes through the years. Harley loved nature, canoeing, camping and hiking. He had an eye for spotting the rare animal, bird, etc.; much to the delight of his family. For a number of years, he was a member of the NY Air National Guard and was activated into the US Air Force during the Berlin Wall Crisis spending 1961-1962 in Phalsburg, France.
