Obituary of Betty G. Merriman

POTSDAM—Funeral services for 81 year old Betty G. Merriman will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Knapp’s Station Community Church with Rev. Lee Sweeney presiding. Family and friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Norwood on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mrs. Merriman passed away Tuesday morning at her home. Betty is survived by her sons, Charles and Donna, Potsdam and Richard, Norfolk; her daughter Ranota Hewitson, Potsdam; her eleven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and her cousin Marlene Wood, Raymondville. She was pre-deceased by her husband Joel in July of 2015. Born on November 12, 1934, Betty was raised by the late Ernest and Opal Jewel Parker White. She graduated from Norwood High School as well as Canton ATC. She married Joel C. Merriman on June 5, 1954. Betty and her husband were co-owners of J.C. Merriman, INC. in Norwood. In 2001, Joel and Betty received from the Northern New York Lumber Dealers Association the highest honor given, the “Lumber Person of the Year” award. Betty was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Potsdam and was a past member of the Board of Directors of North County Supply and also sat on the Board of the Casa Clara Condo Association in Key Colony Beach, FL. Betty enjoyed spending her summers at her camp on Higley Flow in Colton and her winters in Key Colony Beach, FL. She enjoyed knitting for her grandchildren and also liked to golf and tend to her flower gardens. Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Potsdam Rescue Squad or a Charity of one’s choice.
